As the oldest and largest non-profit hospice in our area, Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice has been providing hospice care since 1983. Hospice is a special concept of care designed to provide comfort and support to patients and their families when a terminal illness no longer responds to cure-oriented treatments improving the quality of a patient's last days by offering comfort and dignity. Hospice care neither prolongs life nor hastens death. Hospice staff and volunteers offer a specialized knowledge of end-of-life care, including pain and symptom management and deals with the emotional, social and spiritual impacts of the disease on the patient, their family and friends.

The 500,000 + hospice volunteers at work through the U.S. are an essential part of the hospice philosophy of care and, in fact, are required by federal law. As a patient/caregiver companion, the volunteer provides a presence. Some volunteers read aloud, play music, listen or are simply "present". Caregivers often need time away to address events in their own life such as grocery shopping, doctor's appointments or a much needed respite for a few hours. Volunteers step in during these times and fill a need in homes and living facilities.

Volunteering can be tailored to your schedule and your availability and even the training program can be tailored to your schedule if necessary. Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice serves 25 counties in Kansas and volunteers are needed in every county. (see our other listings on Volunteer Match for non-patient care opportunities) Volunteer application can be found here: https://www.hynesmemorial.org/volunteer/
We would love to have you join our family of volunteers!

**COVID and flu vaccinations are required and proper COVID protocol as dictated by the CDC must be followed.
