Student Scholarship Evaluation Committee
Each year, the Black United Fund of Oregon (BUF) awards scholarships to BIPOC students within our community as they aim to pursue higher education. Last year alone, approximately $650,000 was awarded to over 30 high school graduates! As part of the selection process, students must submit their applications to be evaluated by a committee before being invited to interview. This committee relies heavily on the service and dedication from volunteers like you!
As a member of the Scholarship Evaluation Committee, you will support the selection of student scholars. Utilizing Foundant, an online scholarship management system, completed application packets will be available for your review; committee members will be responsible for providing feedback for each applicant back to the team. Volunteers may also have the opportunity to conduct interviews with applicants, as well.
Time Commitment: the average estimated time required for this volunteer opportunity is 20 to 30 hours over the course of a few months, usually March and April. A few online meetings will be required for participation, including:
- Post-application review and interview selection meeting (held via Zoom)
- Foundant Training (also provided in written/video format)
- If asked to participate, student applicant interviews (you will likely conduct several, but not all interviews)

The Black United Fund of Oregon's mission is to assist in the social and economic development of Oregon's low-income communities and to contribute to a broader understanding of ethnically and culturally diverse groups.
Description
In 1983, leaders in North and Northeast Portland, Oregon noticed that many philanthropic organizations were providing minimal support to communities of color. To combat this inequality, those same leaders started BUF-OR, to channel charitable funds to low-income areas. Our mission is accomplished through several response areas, including three Program Areas: (1) Post-Secondary Options, providing services to B IPOC youth interested in pursuing higher education, the skilled trades, or direct-to-career routes , (2) Community Justice & Equity, helping connect Black entrepreneurs and Black-owned businesses to the resources and relationships they need to thrive , and (3) Community Giving, supporting mission-aligned B IPOC and/or female-led and -serving grassroots organizations that provide vital resources for our community . BUF-OR is the longest-standing B IPOC-led and serving foundation in Oregon and one of the last culturally-specific organizations remaining on historically-Black NE Alberta Street.
