Raising Hope's Room of Hope Volunteer (Pinellas-Largo)

WHAT IS RAISING HOPE?

When children are removed from abusive or neglectful homes, they often have inadequate, dirty, and/or stained clothing, and little else. They may also carry their few belongings in a trash bag. These children deserve more and Raising Hope is here to help!

Raising Hope serves, on average, over 4,000 kids of all ages each year. When a child enters a ROOM OF HOPE, they discover a cheerful, store-like room where they can " no-cost shop" for clothing, toiletries, shoes, school needs, comfort items, and more. We also provide duffel bags so that they no longer have to live out of trash bags!

Entering into foster care can be scary and confusing. Raising Hope ensures that each child has clean clothes and other basic items so that they can retain their pride and dignity through a traumatic time.

Raising Hope is a program of Eckerd Connects, a locally-based nonprofit organization that gives much-needed second chances to children and families since 1968.

HOW YOU CAN HELP

*Individually*
We are currently looking for individual volunteers that can commit to 2-3 hours a week volunteering at the Largo Room of Hope on WEDNESDAYS initially. Shifts are: 830a-11a, 11a-2p, and 2p-430p. Once you are trained and cleared, you may choose a day that works better for you. You would often be working solo or with a small group. Due to the nature of our program, you may or may not see the children and clients during each shift as children are removed from their situations at all times of the day,

*As a Group*
If you are part of a church, business, organization school, etc. and would like to do a team-building volunteer day at our Room of Hope, we would love to coordinate a day of service for your team. Due to COVID-19, at this time we are limiting our groups to 5 people at one time. If your team is larger, we can also do multiple shifts. Please reach out for more information.

*From Afar*
If you are not able to volunteer during the week, another way you can help is by coordinating a donation drive. Please contact us to coordinate a drive and learn what our most needed items are at the time.

For more information, please contact Christina Needham 727-773-7713 or cneedham@eckerd.org

Location:

Mission Statement

Eckerd Connect's mission is to provide and share solutions that promote the well-being of children and families in need of a second chance. This is driven by our vision of ensuring that each child has the opportunity to succeed, and our belief that all children have the right to grow up safe, healthy, and fulfilled in families that love and nurture them.

Description

Every two minutes, a child is removed from his or her home due to abuse or neglect, often with nothing more than the clothes on their back. Children entering foster care seldom have a toothbrush and many carry the few belongings they have in a garbage bag. But there’s hope for these children in need.

Eckerd Connect’s Raising Hope program provides these children with emergency supplies like clothing and toiletries along with comfort items, like a teddy bear.

Rooms of Hope are set up like stores and are filled with fresh clothing, pajamas, shoes, hygiene items, diapers and other necessities. Children and families are able to "shop" for the items they need all while maintaining a sense of pride and dignity. Rooms of Hope are usually co-located within Eckerd Connects offices or facilities for easier access in emergency situations.
