Position: Resident Volunteer - Visitor Services -- San Marcos de Apalache Historic State Park

General Description: Looking for a peaceful camping experience? San Marcos de Apalache Historic State Park resident volunteers occupy the ONLY overnight camping spots in the park. Volunteer duties primarily include museum operations, which entails opening and closing the park, operating the point of sale, interacting with visitors, cleaning, and other duties. Other duties could include grounds keeping and maintenance projects. 20 hours per week per campsite required. The schedule for volunteers at this park is 9:00am-5:00pm Saturday and Sunday + 4 hours (AM or PM) Friday. This may change after July.

Volunteer sites have water, electric (50/30 amp) and septic hook ups and will accommodate up to a 35’ RV. The park is located on Tucker’s Point and offers scenic views at the water’s edge where the St. Marks River joins the Wakulla River and flows out in Apalache Bay. The point is an excellent spot for fishing. Both fresh and saltwater species are commonly caught at this unique spot where fresh and saltwater come together.

We are currently accepting applications for the months of May through December 2023. Residents are allowed a maximum of 16 weeks. At least 2 months is preferred.

Assigned Tasks:
-Open and close the park
-Operate museum: admit visitors, sell passes, etc.
-Maintain grounds and facilities
-Other projects and duties, as assigned

Qualifications & Skills: Ability to communicate in a friendly, effective, and professional manner. Ability to operate point of sale system (training required). Demonstration of timeliness and responsibility. Other helpful skills: general maintenance and landscaping

Standards & Performance: Must meet the minimum number of hours required each week. Must submit weekly log of hours worked each week. Must be able to present oneself in a professional manner to the public when encountered. Must be trained in and adhere to all Florida Park Service Safety and Customer Service Procedures and convey an understanding of our mission statement to the public and to fellow staff members. Must adhere to the volunteer uniform standards as designated by supervisor. Must be able to work independently and with staff and other volunteers effectively.

Hours Required:
Park Resident Volunteers: 20 hours/week per site minimum. Volunteers are required to stay 1-4 months, maximum stay is 16 weeks per fiscal year (July 1 - June 30) at any one park.
