We are seeking a Spanish-speaking woman to mentor a 16-year-old refugee youth from Honduras. This youth lives in Bethany's residential girls group home in Kentwood, Michigan. She has been in the U.S. since April of 2021. She is a 10th grader at her local public school taking ESL classes. She will need a Spanish-speaking mentor if possible. Her case manager shared that this youth enjoys spending time walking outside, listening to music and drawing. She prefers to keep mostly to herself and not interact or talk much. She is not a huge fan of school and finds it difficult to attend classes and stay motivated. We are hopeful that a mentor can help motivate this youth and encourage her to see the good and importance of school despite the English barrier. She is very eager to learn English, but has been very discouraged with how hard it has been.
Background: This youth has never known her father and lived with her mother and younger sister, whom she essentially raised because her mother was often absent. She also experienced abuse from her mother.

Description
For refugees fleeing danger, the search for safety can be extremely challenging. And too often, people become numbers in a system that can feel impossible to navigate. That’s why we guide, protect, advocate for, and support refugees. In the U.S., we offer resettlement and continued support services in strategic locations.
Bethany Christian Services' Refugee and Immigrant Services program encompasses adult and family resettlement as well as refugee foster care for Unaccompanied Children and Unaccompanied Refugee Minors. Our services for unaccompanied refugee youth include case management, counseling, housing (foster homes, group homes, independent living), classes (New Arrival, Life Skills, driver's training), and volunteer mentoring and tutoring.
