A mentor's moment
Every two-weeks we feature an outstanding mentor and share their experience and practices with fellow mentors. Here, Mr. Rob sits with his scholars, in his sixth year of commitment to making an impact in Baltimore City.

Higher Achievement closes the opportunity gap during the pivotal middle school years. By leveraging the power of communities, Higher Achievement’s proven model provides a rigorous year-round learning environment, caring role models, and a culture of high expectations, resulting in college-bound scholars with the character, confidence, and skills to succeed. We are looking for volunteers to work with our middle schoolers in one of two ways:

1. Literacy Tutors
Literacy Tutors commit 1-3x per week in the afternoon (roughly 4-6pm). While at our school sites, Tutors work with a small group of scholars on reading, writing, and discussion activities to boost their literacy skills and make them more confident readers and writers. No teaching experience required and all lessons and materials will be provided!

2. High School Readiness Mentors
Mentors commit 1x per week in the evening (approximately 5:30-6:45pm). As a Mentor, you are paired with a small group of scholars (max. 4) and will work with that same group of scholars for the course of an entire school year. Mentors support scholars as they define and pursue their personal and educational goals, gain awareness of high school, college, and career options, and take steps to access those options through writing, reading, and critical thinking activities. All lessons and materials will be provided!

We are looking for volunteers at two sites in Baltimore:
Mount Royal Elementary-Middle School
121 McMechen St, Baltimore, MD 21217

Highlandtown 237 Elementary-Middle School
231 S. Eaton Street Baltimore, MD 21224
**Spanish-speakers needed**

If you are interested in either opportunity, please fill out this interest form and we'll be in touch: https://higherachievement.formtitan.com/ftfed620701540763402082#/

Mission Statement

Talent is everywhere, but opportunity is not. We envision a world where all students' potential and promise is realized, regardless of their circumstances.

Description

Higher Achievement is a non-profit organization that helps underserved middle-school students, referred to as "scholars", improve their grades, attendance, and standardized test scores, culminating in acceptance to top high schools in Baltimore. Higher Achievement delivers year-round, rigorous academic programming that yields outstanding outcomes.

During the scholars' four years in Higher Achievement, they study social-justice oriented curricula; work with mentors weekly; self select enriching elective courses; and participate in academic contests, university stays, and academic field trips. Higher Achievement's strong network of mentors is instrumental to the success of its program.
