Become a Literacy New Jersey - West Hudson volunteer tutor and help adults in Hudson County improve their reading, writing and speaking skills.

Online spring tutor training begins on March 8, 2022.

Tutor Training
Literacy New Jersey trains volunteer tutors to work with adult learners. Our tutor training consists of five online workshops which will provide volunteers with the tools and strategies necessary for working with adults in English as a Second Language (ESL) and Basic Literacy skills (BL).

Tutor Assignments
After completing training, volunteer tutors are matched with a student or small group of students. Tutoring can take place online OR in-person at the Kearny Public Library (318 Kearny Avenue, Kearny NJ).

Mission Statement

Literacy New Jersey exists so all adults have the opportunity to read, write, and communicate effectively. We do this by training volunteer tutors to help adult learners and by supporting a network of literacy programs.

Description

Literacy New Jersey provides free instruction to adults who need help with reading, writing, math and speaking English. Trained volunteer tutors work with adults one-to-one or in small groups to help them improve their language and literacy skills so they can reach their life goals.

Tutors are trained to develop personalized instruction plans for their students. Tutoring is designed to meet the needs of the students by utilizing high interest materials and techniques effective in the instruction of adults. Instruction is one to one or small groups either in a public place or held virtually. The program is accredited by ProLiteracy, a national literacy organization.

  • Spring 2022 Online Tutor Training Schedule - Five Tuesdays - March 8, 15, 22, 29 and April 5 - 6:00-8:00pm - Zoom. After training, volunteer tutors are asked to commit to 50 hours of tutoring.
  • Training books and materials fee: $45
