BCAUSEICAN has a mission to provide programs and services to underserved communities. The leading program is the BCAUSEICANCODE curriculum, which provides the instruction of coding concepts, terminology and skills to begin the art of coding for grades K-12. We currently focus on schools in Washington DC, Maryland, and Virginia (the DMV as it is known to locals).

We currently offer our classes as part of after-school enrichment programming. Experience teaching students K-12 is desired and some coding experience is preferred. These classes teach Scratch, a game-like program that helps students learn the basics of block-based coding.

We would like to recruit a long-term instructor for our in-person coding classes at Shaw Community Center. These are two 1 hour classes, back to back starting at 4 pm on Wednesdays. We are looking for someone who would like to work with us for at least a year, building relationships with the students and community center.

These classes are held in person, and per school requirements, you must be vaccinated against the COVID-19 virus. This position is for an assistant teacher that will be trained to move into the lead teacher position. Classes are around 15 students and consist of some lecture and time for the students to practice. Teachers keep students on track, help them understand the concepts, and provide a good role model. Other responsibilities may include some hardware/software and local area networking support in conjunction with the class and community center.

The classes are taught with pre-made lectures and materials, but if you’d like to be involved in curriculum writing, that is welcome

Education:

  • Bachelors in Computer Science or current undergraduate student in computer science preferred.
  • Applicants should have the willingness to teach children both virtually and in person, solid knowledge of block-based and object-oriented coding languages.
  • Must be 18 or older.

Skills:

  • Solid understanding of block-based and object-oriented coding languages and the ability to clearly communicate coding topics to elementary students.
  • Fluency in Spanish is a plus.
  • In-person instructors must be vaccinated. Background verification is mandatory for this role
