Tech Advocate Program

COVID-19 spurred us to innovate rapidly to keep our patients healthy and safe. By creating the technology needed to provide virtual care, our clinicians and staff are helping thousands of patients each month. The goal of our work will be to help enroll patients in the patient portal so that they can send their care team messages, request for refills, ask medical questions, schedule appointments, and have access to all their medical records including getting their lab results sent directly to them; and of course, also do video visits. We also want to collect data to ensure we aren’t widening disparities or causing harm by deploying technology. Lastly, we know many of our patients have low-tech literacy and poor access to tech resources and we are hoping to bridge those gaps.

Volunteers of the Tech Advocate Program will have the opportunity to work in the primary care or specialty clinics at Alameda Health System. The Tech Advocates is a volunteer-powered and patient-centered program that assists patients with enrollment on our patient portal app, MyAlamedaHealth.

Deliverables:

  1. Phone outreach to patients scheduled for an appointment.
  2. Offer and assist with MyAlamedaHealth enrollment
  3. Provide basic MyAlamedaHealth support for patients and staff
  4. Data collection and record keeping

Volunteers will collaborate closely with clinic staff as a MyChart guru, helping patients troubleshoot MyAlamedaHealth-related issues such as username/password retrieval, sign-up process, and feature tutorial. Volunteers will also have the opportunity learn the following telehealth software:

  1. Epic - electronic health record system
  2. MyChart - patient portal subsidiary of Epic
  3. Doximity - telehealth communication platform

Requirements:

Must be at least 18 years old

Commit to a minimum of 4 hours per week for 6-8months

Willing to help safety-net patients with low-tech literacy
