Breakthrough San Francisco at SF Day School

Breakthrough San Francisco is an educational non-profit that supports young people in San Francisco on the path to college and trains outstanding college students for education careers. We are looking for adults, college students, and high school students, to volunteer in our after-school program with our academically motivated 5th-8th grade students with limited educational opportunities. All volunteers receive training and support from Breakthrough’s staff. Breakthrough.

The after-school program will begin the week of February 7 and run through the week of April 25 (except for the week of February 21, the week of March 28 and the week of April 11). The volunteer commitment is one day per week. We've pushed back start and end times from prior to the pandemic since all SFUSD middle schools dismiss at 4 pm as of this school year. However, there is a place on the application to let us know if you'd be available to help out earlier in the afternoon (i.e., 3:30 pm), if needed.

Please apply at https://www.breakthroughsf.org/tutor/.

Mission Statement

Breakthrough supports young people in San Francisco on the path to college, and trains outstanding college students for education careers.

Description

At Breakthrough, we believe all young people should have access to an excellent education, a clear pathway to college, and highly effective teachers committed to their success. In pursuit of this vision, we provide intensive, year-round academic enrichment and support to motivated 5-12th graders with limited educational opportunities, helping them attend college, as well as optional follow-up support. In addition, we train outstanding college students from across the country for education careers: developing their instructional skills, building their knowledge of pathways to teaching, and inspiring them to work in the field.

We are proud that 100% of students in our first four graduating classes are currently enrolled in college, including 88% at four-year schools. Meanwhile, two-thirds of our Teaching Fellows who've graduated from college in the past decade are currently working in the education sector, most of them as urban public school teachers. We are an initiative of SF Day School, a K-8 independent school that values increasing opportunity for all students, and one of two dozen national affiliates of the Oakland-based organization Breakthrough Collaborative.
