The So What Else (SWE) Food Pantry is located in the Lakeforest Mall (701 Russell Ave., Gaithersburg MD, 20877) parking lot adjacent to the Ruby Tuesday restaurant entrance (you'll see a large shipping container, that's us!).
The Food Pantry provides relief to families experiencing food insecurity.
This is a person-to-person high-contact volunteer opportunity. Please do not sign up if you are immunocompromised. Volunteers must be age 15 or older; younger volunteers must be accompanied by a parent / adult guardian. Age acceptance will be at the discretion of SWE.
Regular Opening Hours:
The Food Pantry is open to the public from 10AM to 1PM Tuesday, Wednesday & Friday.
From 9AM to 2PM Sunday.
Volunteer Shifts:
8AM to 11AM / 11AM to 2PM Tuesday, Wednesday & Friday.
8AM to 11AM / 11AM to 3PM Sunday
Mondays & Thursdays: Volunteers are primarily involved with deliveries (unloading; stacking in storage or designated area) or pickups (collecting food donations from retailers, farms, warehouses, etc.); not staffing the walk-up pantry.
We have a keen & pressing need for Delivery Drivers! Please consider helping out with Deliveries in lieu of your service at the Food Pantry!
Food Pantry Volunteers assist with site set up and breakdown, loading / unloading pallets of food; breaking down large pallets of produce into parcels ready for pick up by clients in person or for delivery to distribution sites / homebound clients. Volunteers work with SWE staff on designated tasks, including site preparation, line service, stocking / pre-staging, donation center tasks / other projects as directed by SWE staff. Everyone is responsible for keeping all work and service areas safe and free of debris. Observant and proactive volunteers are most appreciated!
We are located outside so appropriate clothing is important! No open toe shoes; dangling adornments should be secured to prevent snagging; wear comfortable work clothes you expect to get dirty. Except in the case of extreme weather we will operate the pantry as scheduled. Text 240 705 4345 to confirm if we are operating during an extraordinary weather event. Please report to Isabella, Mely, Haley or Megan upon arrival at the service site.
Safety note: The Pantry can be fast paced and hectic at times; awareness and initiative are highly valued. Work smart and keep alert. If you feel tired, please do not sit down at the serving table; you can take a rest away from the service line. Please take a few moments to stretch out and limber up before your shift starts!

Description
So What Else (SWE) is a nonprofit founded in 2009 that strives to improve the lives of children and families living in underserved communities in Maryland, D.C. & Baltimore by providing free food, home goods, high-quality, after-school time programs, and service opportunities to the children and families we serve. To support this work, we host a number of volunteer opportunities across the region in fields such as food recovery, teaching, event support and more. We strive to make volunteer service accessible & meaningful for people of all backgrounds, experiences, interests, capabilities, and capacities.
Roles are available for everyone (16 or younger may serve with a parent / designated adult guardian). Some tasks require a bit of bending and lifting (typically 2 to 5 lbs. occasionally up to 50lbs) and or being on your feet for extended periods. No one will be asked or expected to lift, carry or move any item that cause injury. Breaks and hydration are strongly encouraged. Smart teamwork and shared effort are paramount. Help from SWE site hosts and fellow volunteers is always available. For any special needs or considerations, please email volunteer@sowhatelse.org outlining your questions, concerns or requirements.
