Organization Background: Veterans Legal Institute (VLI) Veterans Legal Institute (VLI) provides pro bono legal assistance to homeless, at risk, disabled and low income current and former service members to eradicate barriers to housing, healthcare, education, and employment and foster self-sufficiency. About the Position: Veterans Legal Institute (VLI) seeks to attract Leadership volunteers for its Board who contribute their time, talent and treasure and promote VLI work in the community. VLI is currently governed by a board representing a variety of professions, areas of expertise, and communities throughout the region, click HERE to learn more. Examples of desired attributes:

A commitment in representing and promoting VLI's mission, core values, goals, policies and programs.

Representing VLI's mission and organizational goals throughout the community with Personal and Professional ethics and integrity

Strategic & Innovative Leaders with expertise in at least one of the following areas: Financial management, Legal, Fundraising, Marketing

Specific Duties of the Board Include:

Attend Board meetings every month, participate in minimum one (1) Committee meeting as requested, and attend VLI sponsored events annually

Develop, approve and evaluate goals and objectives to further the organization's mission

Ensure the financial accountability for the organization

Demonstrate a commitment to fundraising by making personal contributions and/or leadership in securing donations from others. A typical gift commitment is $3,000 per year.

Description

Veterans Legal Institute provides free legal services to veterans that cannot afford access to justice. These services include, but are not limited to, complex veteran benefit appeals, discharge upgrades for those who are survivors of military sexual trauma or PTSD, consumer law, limited family law, estate planning for older adult and terminally ill veterans, landlord-tenant with the objective to keep veterans and their families safely housed, and more. The overall approach to Veterans Legal Institute is to remove any barriers to housing, healthcare, employment and education for veterans in need and empower them and their families into self sufficiency. While the organization is growing at a rapid rate, VLI is highly reliant on volunteers who truly fuel its heartbeat and champion our veterans in need.
