Mission Statement

ATOP Meaningful World was founded following the devastating Armenian earthquake of 1988. Our founder, Dr. Ani Kalayjian, recognized that although international aid was vital in mending the physical wounds cased by this disaster, there was very little attention or support given to the invisible wounds caused by traumatic events. The organization has since strived to help people heal from individual, collective and intergenerational trauma. Using scientifically validated meaning-centered intervention strategies, outreach and research, ATOP MeaningfulWorld works to foster a meaningful, peaceful, and just world in which every individual enjoys physical, emotional, mental, social, financial, ecological, and spiritual well-being.

Description

Our work focuses on transforming trauma through three interrelated processes: 1) Humanitarian outreach missions to post-disaster areas, 2) Advocacy for mental health at the United Nations, and 3) Research and publication on the most salient intervention and healing strategies.

Our Humanitarian Outreach Teams have helped rehabilitate survivors of traumatic events in over 48 countries and 26 states in the U.S.A. We help transform tragedy and trauma into healing and meaning-making through post traumatic growth, mindfulness, and mind-body-eco-spirit health, with artful collaboration to provide relief and restoration to those traumatized, and to those treating traumatized populations.

MeaningfulWorld has held affiliative status with the United Nations Department of Global Communication and the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) for nearly thirty years. Our organization advocates for mental health issues with civil society organizations, UN committees and country missions. ATOP MeaningfulWorld co-sponsored the first annual psychology conference at the UN in 1993, founded the annual UN Mind-Body-Eco-Spirit Festival in 2010 and started the first post-doctoral psychology fellowship at the UN in 2018.

Our team has also been at the forefront of scientific research on psychological interventions in post-disaster areas. Nearly 100 articles have been published based on our work, as well as numerous books, book chapters and films.
