WCS Now Interpreter
A Prospect Park Zoo volunteer interacting with a visitor at Conservation Station

Adult volunteers at the Prospect Park Zoo work within the Education Department to engage zoo visitors in many different and exciting ways. Our volunteers strive to inspire a passion for wildlife and nature, cultivate scientific curiosity, and encourage conservation action in visitors of all ages.

WCS Conservation Ambassador

Create a welcoming environment for visitors by providing them with information on zoo happenings and programs, answering questions about the animals, and promoting the conservation mission of the Wildlife Conservation Society through games and activities. If you enjoy learning and sharing your knowledge with others, this role is for you!

WCS Interpreter

Bring your passion for wildlife and conservation to the zoo! Interact with zoo visitors of all ages as you lead them through fun inquiry based activities and WCS conservation actions at various areas around the park. Strong improvisation skills and a flair for the theatrical a plus! Choose a recurring schedule or sign up for shifts each week if you need a more flexible schedule.

WCS Expedition Leader

An Expedition is more than just a tour! Lead fun curriculum based journeys around the zoo. Expedition Leaders share their knowledge about wildlife and conservation, interact with school groups of diverse ages, and sign up for a consistent weekday volunteer schedule. This role is best for those that love public speaking, are comfortable in the outdoors, and can think on their feet.

Sea Lion Narrator

Narrate daily sea lion training demonstrations for the public. Must be comfortable with public speaking and using a microphone. Great for aspiring performers and those needing a short volunteer shift. Can also be combined with another volunteer role.

About Prospect Park Zoo/Widlife Conservation Society

Location:

450 Flatbush Ave., Brooklyn, NY 11225, US

Mission Statement

The Wildlife Conservation Society uniquely combines the resources of wildlife parks in New York with field projects around the globe to inspire care for nature, provide leadership in environmental education, and help sustain our planet's biological diversity.

Description

The basic function of the volunteer program is to educate and inform visitors regarding the Prospect Park Zoo's exhibits and programs. Because of its small size, the PPZ Education Department could not possibly reach the large numbers of people who visit the zoo without the assistance of volunteers. For many visitors, a volunteer will be the only PPZ/WCS representative they encounter. A second function of the program, therefore, is to continue the public impression of the PPZ as a well-run organization, staffed by competent, helpful and courteous people.
