Become a Volunteer!

The City of Alexandria’s Sexual Assault Center is recruiting volunteer advocates.

Volunteers are an integral part of the Sexual Assault Center. After a comprehensive training course, volunteers may become client advocates. Must pass a criminal background check and sex offender registry check.

Volunteers answer the 24-hour hotline virtually on evenings, weekends, and holidays and accompany survivors of sexual assault who are seeking medical attention at INOVA hospital in Fairfax. Volunteers provide emotional support and information to assist survivors in regaining control of their lives. Shifts are 12 hours (typically 6 pm-6 am) weeknights, (typically 6 am to 6 pm and 6 pm to 6 am) weekends, and holidays.

123 North Pitt Street Suite 225, Alexandria, VA 22314, US

Mission Statement

The Department of Community and Human Services provides effective and essential safety net services that measurably improve or maintain the quality of life for Alexandrians. Additionally, the programs overseen by the Alexandria Community Services Board provide compassionate and effective services that support self-determination, recovery and resiliency for Alexandria residents affected by mental illness, intellectual disabilities and substance abuse disorders.

Description

In August of 1975, the Alexandria Commission on the Status of Women established the Rape Victim Companion Program, which later became the Sexual Assault Response and Awareness Program, then in 2011, the Alexandria Sexual Assault Center. The program offers support to victims of sexual assault and their families and friends.

Trained volunteers and staff are available 24 hours a day to provide:

  • crisis intervention and emotional support
  • advocacy with medical, police, and court systems
  • short-term individual and group counseling
  • information and referrals

In addition to services for individuals, the staff is also available to provide trainings, information, and presentations to local schools and organizations.

The Sexual Assault Center offers services for:

  • sexual assault (i.e. rape, attempted rape, fondling, indecent exposure, etc.) survivors and their family and friends
  • sexual harassment and stalking victims
  • women and men of any age, race, ethnicity, immigration status, sexual orientation, gender identity, physical ability, etc.

Many services are offered in both English and Spanish. Staff and volunteers use a confidential translation service to support survivors who speak many more languages.
