Keep up-to-date on tax preparation and make a difference in your community at the same time.
Since 2004, the Commission on Economic Opportunity has been assisting low and moderate income households within our community receive quality tax preparation and avoid high tax prep fees by administering the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program (VITA). The VITA program offers free tax help to people who generally make $57,000 or less, persons with disabilities and limited English speaking taxpayers who need assistance in preparing their own tax returns. IRS-certified volunteers provide free basic income tax return preparation with electronic filing to qualified individuals.
WE NEED YOUR HELP!!!
How does this program work?
We will provide the training materials and individual instruction to help you get your tax certifications. Training is also offered online. As a volunteer, you will join the thousands of others who each year prepare millions of tax returns at free tax sites nationwide. As a committed tax volunteer you’ll be assigned to work a few hours a week (during your regular work schedule) at our tax site, first to receive training and then to begin volunteering. Certified tax preparers are also able to utilize the tax software to file their own taxes and those of their family members.
Can I do the training online?
Yes, but you would need to pick up the materials in person.
How many hours do I need to commit to?
As few or as many hours as you are able to volunteer. Volunteering will be Monday - Friday from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, with some AM Saturday hours. Actual volunteering is from February through Tax Date in April. Our written training materials usually arrive in December. We have orientation in January.
What is the location?
The service is provided at our CEO’s office in Wilkes-Barre. The building is closed to the public at the moment. Access information, and other details, will be given to you once you sign up to volunteer.
Do I need any special skills?
No tax preparation experience is required; we’ll provide the training. But some computer literacy is required. Tax preparers need to pass a Certification Test prior to preparing tax returns. If you are bilingual, English and Spanish or another language, that would be helpful too. In addition, you’ll need to assist clients in person so take into account any health issues that may be a consideration. We want to create a safe environment for our volunteers, clients, and staff.
