ORGANIZATION: American Red Cross - National Headquarters

This position supports the National Headquarters (NHQ) International Services (ISD) department. This is a remote (volunteer-from-home) position.
The Volunteer Watch Officer supports the Response and Recovery (R+R) team by monitoring the world (or specific regions) for sudden-onset disaster activity during weekends and holidays. For any event that will possibly generate an International Services Department (ISD) response, the Watch Officer is responsible for collecting the initial information about the event, perform an initial triage, and alerting the appropriate Response Lead/Volunteer Partner and/or Operations team. This is a remote (volunteer-from-home) opportunity.

  • Monitor media and other authoritative sources for sudden-onset disasters, or escalations of protracted events.
  • Collect initial situational awareness information about each event.
  • When necessary, and pursuant to guidance, alert the appropriate ISD Response Lead, or other ISD staff, and conduct an initial incident briefing.
  • If necessary, provide initial incident briefings to Response Management Team (RMT) or ISD Management.
  • Coordinate monitoring coverage among team members, as needed.
  • Provide peer-to-peer support among the team in referring matters to ISD leadership

Required:

  • Experience monitoring international events
  • Experience working with disaster response issues, trends and policies
  • Knowledge of (or strong desire to develop) ISD response modalities, ConOps and key factors driving response decisions.
  • Ability to consume a wide range of information and data to provide summaries and analysis as needed.
  • Ability to rapidly analyze situations and identify salient points and underlying issues.
  • Comfortable with Microsoft Office Suite and various communications tools (e.g., WhatsApp, Teams, Slack, Skype),
  • Comfortable working on a remote team
