We are looking for a Spanish-speaking volunteer to tutor an 18-year-old refugee from Mexico who lives in a foster home in Belding. He has been in the United States since November of 2018. He is a 9th grader at his local high school, and he needs assistance with general English proficiency, homework, and Math. His case manager shared, "This youth has struggled with motivation at school and has said several times that school is "hopeless" for him. His English has not developed to the expected level considering how long he has been in the country. The foster parent is requesting an evaluation to determine if there are any cognitive concerns as the youth seems to struggle a lot with school. That referral is currently in the process."

A volunteer would be asked to commit to six months of tutoring for one, 1-hour session each week.

Mission Statement

Bethany demonstrates the love and compassion of Jesus Christ by protecting children, empowering youth, and strengthening families through quality social services.

Description

For refugees fleeing danger, the search for safety can be extremely challenging. And too often, people become numbers in a system that can feel impossible to navigate. That’s why we guide, protect, advocate for, and support refugees. In the U.S., we offer resettlement and continued support services in strategic locations.

Bethany Christian Services' Refugee and Immigrant Services program encompasses adult and family resettlement as well as refugee foster care for Unaccompanied Children and Unaccompanied Refugee Minors. Our services for unaccompanied refugee youth include case management, counseling, housing (foster homes, group homes, independent living), classes (New Arrival, Life Skills, driver's training), and volunteer mentoring and tutoring.
