The Board will support the work of Neuro Diverse Living (NDL) and provide mission-based leadership and strategic governance. While day-to-day operations are led by NDL’s chief executive officer (CEO), the Board-CEO relationship is a partnership, and the appropriate involvement of the Board is both critical and expected. Specific Board Member responsibilities include:

Leadership, governance, and oversight
  • Serving as a trusted advisor to the CEO as s/he develops and implements NDL’s strategic plan
  • Reviewing outcomes and metrics created by NDL for evaluating its impact, and regularly measuring its performance and effectiveness using those metrics; reviewing agenda and supporting materials prior to board and committee meetings
  • Approving NDL’s annual budget, audit reports, and material business decisions; being informed of, and meeting all, legal and fiduciary responsibilities
  • Contributing to an annual performance evaluation of the CEO
  • Assisting the CEO and board chair in identifying and recruiting other Board Members
  • Partnering with the CEO and other board members to ensure that board resolutions are carried out
  • Serving on committees or task forces and taking on special assignments
  • Representing NDL to stakeholders; acting as an ambassador for the organization
  • Ensuring NDL’s commitment to a diverse board and staff that reflects the communities NDL serves
Fundraising

NDL Board Members will consider NDL a philanthropic priority and make annual gifts that reflect that priority. So that NDL can credibly solicit contributions from foundations, organizations, and individuals, NDL expects to have 100 percent of Board Members make an annual contribution that is commensurate with their capacity.

Board terms/participation

NDL’s Board Members will serve a three-year term to be eligible for re-appointment for one additional term. Board meetings will be held quarterly and committee meetings will be held in coordination with full board meetings.

Mission Statement

Our mission is to offer adults with autism or other intellectual developmental disabilities the opportunity to live as independently as possible by providing safe and secure neuro-inclusive cohousing communities with built-in amenities, meaningful employment opportunities, and natural support systems, and to give their parents and aging caregivers peace of mind that they will never have to worry about their children being alone or isolated.

Description

As parents of adult sons with autism, we know the challenges faced by this population. Our short-term goal is to acquire single-family homes for 3 or more individuals with the appropriate level of individualized support. Our long-term goal is to develop co-housing communities capable of caring for dozens of neurodiverse individuals. In this way, we will provide viable lifelong housing options that address the economic constraints and daily living requirements these individuals face when they are on their own.
