This position supports the National Headquarters (NHQ) Services to the Armed Forces (SAF) team. This is a remote (volunteer-from-home opportunity).

Connect and support military members and their families during family emergencies as well as support the Hero Care Network during a surge in demand and/or the Contingency of Operations Plan (COOP) is activated for large-scale responses, such as for disasters or deployments.

  • Provide casework services to members of the U.S. military and their families and to other eligible Red Cross clients.
  • Provide emergency communication tasks during family emergencies, such as intake, verification and delivery of emergency messages between service members and their families.
    • Interview callers and coordinate requests for service to include recording all client information in the case management system; determine eligibility for Red Cross services; assess client needs; and provide appropriate services to clients.
    • Perform outbound activities including obtaining verifications, delivering messages, coordinating case management services with the jurisdictional region, and/or providing other follow-up actions needed for complete and timely client service.
    • Compose and send emergency communication messages to domestic and overseas locations.
  • Send messages for delivery to deployment locations and ships at sea using military networks.
  • Perform specific tasks related to a surge need. Tasks assigned will be aligned with volunteer skills, training and availability.
  • Participate in COOP drills.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by management.
  • Understand and apply Red Cross and SAF policies consistently and correctly.
Time:
  • Commits to being on the roster to be alerted in the event of activation of the COOP.
  • When alerted of COOP activation, work shifts in coordination with the needs of their region and based on personal availability.
  • Meet requirement to stay current - which can either be working 8 hours a month or performing 8 services a month and/or taking a quarterly refresher training.
  • Commits to working regularly scheduled shifts with the Hero Care Center staff
  • Participate in quarterly COOP drills.
  • Time to complete required training to perform at least one emergency communication task.
