Rescue Route Volunteers rescue food that would otherwise be wasted by picking it up from a designated donor and delivering it to one of Loaves & Fishes’ 100+ partner agencies. Rescue routes take approximately 1 - 1.5 hours to complete and offer tremendous flexibility to volunteers. Choose either a regular weekly route, or run a route when you can - either choice is helpful! The first step after signing up is orientation, which is hosted at our office. Once a volunteer has completed orientation they can chose routes based on their availability each week thereafter.
When you become a volunteer, Loaves & Fishes sends a weekly email notification of available routes from which you can choose the best fit for your schedule, or none at all. Rescue routes are primarily run in the mornings, 7 days a week.
Requirements to be a rescue route driver include: a valid driver’s license, proof of insurance and attending an orientation. Upon finishing a route, volunteers are required to report donation poundage information through our online reporting system. All rescue route volunteers must be at least 18 years of age or be accompanied by an adult. Email jessica@WeRescueFood.org for more information.

Mission Statement
It is Loaves & Fishes’ mission to rescue surplus food and redistribute it free of charge to our partner agencies to reduce food insecurity in Greenville County. During 2024, we rescued 2.5 million pounds of food and delivered it to over 100 partner agencies, including food pantries, shelters, afterschool programs, low-income housing and more. We work daily to alleviate food insecurity in our community by ensuring no good food goes to waste.
Description
Ensuring no good food goes to waste means over $9 million in surplus food is redirected to those in need and kept out of our landfills. As long as over 60,000 people in our community struggle to put food on the table, we will be on the road rescuing food.
Food is the largest category of landfill waste, contributing to 14.1% of U.S. emissions. By preventing 2.5 million pounds of food from ending up in our landfills in 2024, we reduced greenhouse gases by 9.5 million pounds and delivered enough food for 2.1 million meals.
