We are launching a vocational training program for HIV positive mothers in Kenya that has been heavily impacted by climate change. The social and economic burden has fallen most heavily upon women in the region. There are high rates of sexual abuse in the regiion, and women have often been forced into prostitution to support their children. We plan to make a positive impact in the community to address this issue.
We are seeking a designer who would be able to help us in designing a product or products which the women would be able to manufacture. The initial vocational training program is to include sewing, and the women would also be trained in beading, as beading is part of the cultural heritage of the region.
The end goal of this volunteer opportunity would be the design of a product that we would be able to use in a crowdfunding campaign, essentially seeking pre-sales of the product. The choice of materials in the product design is somewhat up in the air at this time, possibilities include organic cotton, recycled plastic products, beads, and wood bark cloth.
We believe that the design of the product should be of high stylistic and quality. We would like to see this project flourish into the development of a business and expanding the products that we would be able to offer. This could include the development of clothing and interior design products. The end goal is in part to create a livelihood for the women, so that they can support their families. However, proceeds from the sales of products would then be returned to community projects in three areas: education and food for children, the development of a seed bank and community gardening to improve food security, and the development of a micro-credit loan system to help other women in the region to develop their own business enterprises.
The starting point of all of this is the design of a product. However, we would like to see this as the starting point of a long-term relationship with a designer. Once we get past this first phase of crowdfunding, we would be looking to financially compensate the designer for his or her work .

Mission Statement

Our mission is to empower communities to be self-reliant, resiliant and ecologically sustainable. We aim to be a catalyst for positive change in creating new models for how individuals, communities and societies to live in peace and in harmony with the natural world.

Description

Upsurgent has developed out of a core understanding that humanity and our planet are at a point of transformation, and humanity must take hold of this opportunity to build new models for living that are based upon self-actualization, peace and ecological sustainability. This entails transforming our lives, our communities and our societies to function in balance and harmony with our fellow man and the natural world. Unity is essential to the transition to a better world: the unity of all humanity coming together and the unity of ourselves and societies with the natural world. But this unity is deaper; it is the holistic understanding that the necessary transformation touches every aspect of our lives from the most mundane to the most spiritual.

We are currently launching our online platform which is a point of collaboration and synergy where we are able to implement and realize ideas and local projects. We are currently starting our work in the Turkana region of Kenya, assisting a group of HIV positive mothers through vocational training and building sustainable solutions for their community to mitigate the effects of climate change.
