ORGANIZATION: USS Midway Museum

The USS MIDWAY Museum’s Youth Overnight Volunteers assist the youth program team with supervising the groups and helping facilitate activities.

Opportunity Requirements & Important Notes:

Time Commitment: at least one event per month. There are two, full, 5-hr. shifts required: evening shift 5-10:15 pm and a morning shift 6-10 am. There is the option of spending the night on board. Onboarding and training of volunteers are provided.

Required Skills/Experience: Prospective volunteers must be friendly, articulate, have the ability to climb ship’s ladders, and be a minimum of 18 years of age. A background security check is required.

Training Provided: Volunteers need a basic understanding of the ship and its components. Topics may include Boy Scouts of America Youth Protection Act Training and Customer Service.

There are 40 programs/events planned per year. Volunteers will interact with guests at chat stations, conduct Q & A’s and assist staff with behind -the-scenes tours. Chat sessions involve talking to groups about the functions, history and stories of specific stations throughout the Museum.

Description

The USS Midway Museum opened to the public in June 2004 and today is one of San Diego’s most popular visitor attractions with world wide audience. The naval aircraft carrier was commissioned in 1945 and served for 47 years supporting U.S. military and humanitarian efforts around the world. Nearly 250,000 sailors and officers served their country aboard the USS Midway before it was decommissioned (retired) in 1992. Museum includes more than 60 audio tour stops including nearly 30 aircraft ranging from the WWII era to today's technology in Naval aviation. Come be a part of this 'city at sea'!
