ORGANIZATION: Bethany Christian Services

We are looking for a male volunteer who is interested in mentoring a 19-year-old refugee from Eritrea. This youth has been in Bethany's program since December of 2019. He currently lives in one of Bethany's independent living plus group homes in Wyoming, Michigan. He is an 11th grader at a local charter high school, and his school attendance has been mediocre but improving. He also works full time at a local printing company. He has his driver's license and his own vehicle.

The youth shared in his mentoring survey that once he gets to know someone he is talkative and enjoys going out and doing things more than staying home. For fun he enjoys soccer, volleyball, and listening to music. He is interested in learning a musical instrument like guitar, keyboard, or saxophone. He does not enjoy watching movies with other people. He is interested in helping people for a career, and he has thought about coaching or counseling. For mentoring activities he is potentially interested in exploring the city, sometimes working on schoolwork, learning a musical instrument, outdoor activities, video games, sports, sometimes cooking/baking, crafts/art, concerts and theater, and researching colleges/careers.

His case manager shared, "This youth speaks and understands English well. He is able to communicate
effectively. As an ESL youth, he struggles at time to fully understand/speak English, but has not needed to use an interpreter during meetings with Bethany staff."

Mission Statement

Bethany demonstrates the love and compassion of Jesus Christ by protecting children, empowering youth, and strengthening families through quality social services.

Description

For refugees fleeing danger, the search for safety can be extremely challenging. And too often, people become numbers in a system that can feel impossible to navigate. That’s why we guide, protect, advocate for, and support refugees. In the U.S., we offer resettlement and continued support services in strategic locations.

Bethany Christian Services' Refugee and Immigrant Services program encompasses adult and family resettlement as well as refugee foster care for Unaccompanied Children and Unaccompanied Refugee Minors. Our services for unaccompanied refugee youth include case management, counseling, housing (foster homes, group homes, independent living), classes (New Arrival, Life Skills, driver's training), and volunteer mentoring and tutoring.
