  • At this time, our office is open in a limited capacity for staff and volunteers only, due to the Covid-19 pandemic. For SPRING 2022, this internship will follow a hybrid model of both remote and in-person work.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Rian Immigrant Center, located in downtown Boston, Massachusetts, is seeking a motivated and enthusiastic Education Services program co-op. The Education Services co-op role offers an opportunity for someone interested in empowering immigrants and refugees through education, and in becoming part of a team dedicated to helping immigrants integrate into their new communities. This is an exciting chance for someone to make a positive difference in the lives of immigrants, learn new organizational, technical and communication skills, and gain a deeper appreciation for a diverse range of cultures and viewpoints. In this role, you will gain experience as part of a small and supportive Education Services team in a non-profit setting, be given significant responsibility, and receive on-the-job training and support.

TIME COMMITMENT

32 per week, Monday-Thursday. There are no ESOL classes on Fridays. Rian Immigrant Center is closed on the weekends. (If you are not able to do full time, we are happy to consider part-time, 15+ hours a week - the role requirements will be adjusted accordingly)

DATES: January-May/June 2022. Start and end date are adjustable as needed.

COMPENSATION
We are glad to assist with any requirements to qualify an eligible student for academic credit. A possible monthly stipend may be offered for 32+ hours a week.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Virtual ESOL Classroom Assistance
    • Assisting adult immigrant and refugee students in a level 1 English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) course (classes are all virtual at this time due to the COVID-19 pandemic)
    • Assisting ESOL instructors and students with tech issues on virtual platforms used for remote learning (Zoom, WhatsApp and Google Classroom)
  • Laptop Loaning Program Support
    • Preparing Chromebooks to loan out to new students; processing returned Chromebooks; performing data entry on computers loaned out to students
  • Textbook Support
    • Preparing textbooks for in-person pickup or USPS shipping to ESOL students
  • Student Tech Support
    • Providing individual tech coaching to students at varying levels of digital literacy on how to use loaner Chromebooks from Rian Immigrant Center for ESOL classes and citizenship tutoring
  • Test Administration
    • Proctoring standardized (TABE CLAS-E Online) placement testing for all new ESOL students, either online or in-person
    • Proctoring and manually scoring standardized (TABE CLAS-E Online) pre- and post-tests for all ESOL students at the beginning and end of the semester, either online or in-person
  • New ESOL Student Intakes
    • Communicating with prospective students verbally and in writing
    • Conducting phone assessments with students
    • Analyzing prospective student information and entering data into Salesforce
    • Scheduling prospective students for placement testing (online or in-person)
    • Adding students to waitlists and course lists in Google Drive and Salesforce
    • Referring students as needed to partner organizations
  • Collaboration
    • Setting personal and professional goals for your co-op experience
    • Attending regular meetings with your supervisor
    • Attending Rian all-staff meetings
    • Attending Education Services program meetings
    • Attending Anti-Racist Study Hall meetings

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES may include but are not limited to:

  • Tutoring students in Rian’s Individual Achievement Program (IAP)
  • Tutoring students in Rian’s citizenship tutoring program
  • Hosting online ESOL conversation groups, office hours, or student learning pods
  • Adapting program documents for student accessibility
  • Collaborating with the Communications team on fliers and infographics for students
  • Performing data collection, entry and clean-up as needed for grant reporting
  • Accompanying Education Services staff on in-person, outdoor student meetups
  • Other administrative tasks as assigned by Director of Education Services

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Proficiency with Zoom and Google apps (Drive, Sheets, Docs, Calendar, etc.)
  • Excellent empathy, verbal and written communication skills

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bilingual (Spanish preferred - must have some Spanish conversation skills - high beginner proficiency or higher) or multilingual
  • Experience traveling/studying/living/working outside of the US
  • Experience with immigrant/refugee populations
  • Experience as a Teaching Assistant
  • Experience with data entry (particularly Salesforce), WhatsApp, and/or Google Classroom
