JOB SUMMARY:

The Volunteer Digital Literacy Tutor is responsible for supporting digital literacy learners in gaining basic computer skills. Tutors provide excellent service based on the training they receive as part of their tutoring experience. Supported by the Digital Literacy team, the DL Volunteer Tutor will help facilitate learning and completion of the Basic Skills Computer course. Volunteer Tutors complete a self-paced, online tutor training course and tutor for at least 9 hours per quarter (3 months).

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES/ DUTIES:

  • Complete self-paced, online Digital Literacy Tutor Training.

  • Trainees also review the Basic Computer Skills online course.

  • Trained tutors serve 9+ hours facilitating learners’ progress through the Basic Computer Skills online course.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS:

Education:

  • High School Diploma, G.E.D., or digital literacy competence

Experience:

  • At least 18 years old

  • Able to pass a background check

  • Some skill with technology, using computers, and working with diverse populations.

* Tutoring experience not required

Skills:

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

  • Basic computers skills

  • Excellent organizational skills and prioritizing skills

  • Able to communicate and work effectively with a diverse group of people

  • Demonstrated integrity and honesty in handling confidential information

Work Context:

Includes indoors and outdoors; in-person tutoring may take place in a public venue such as a library, computer lab, or community center.

Description

-Test and evaluate computers for working components.

-Repurpose machines using working components.

-Repurposed machines will then be loaded with a secure, open source system that will ensure families always have up to date software at no cost.

-Open doors to repurposing process allowing volunteers to learn a vocation and earn a free computer (if certain qualifications are met).

This process will allow us to equip computers with specific software and links that promote education and prosperity.
