ORGANIZATION: MITTENS FOR DETROIT INC

Kohl's Big Sorters

Come downtown and lend a hand to Mittens for Detroit! We are in our 13th Season of Warmth, with Community Collection boxes all over Metro Detroit. The new pairs of mittens and gloves from the collections will start coming into our office before Thanksgiving, and keep coming through February. We average more than 30,000 new pairs each year.

This is where YOU come in! We need your help as a volunteer in The Big Sort! This event runs from November through February, and it is comprised of a series of little Big Sorts. You'll come to our office to sort pairs by sizes, count the pairs, and then box them up for our Distribution Partners to pick up. This is an indoor activity, it's lots of fun, and you will know you are making a difference immediately.

Teams of volunteers sign up with Mittens for Detroit for a 2-3 hour block of time, on a mutually agreed upon date. We work with you to find the best time and date for your event, as each event is set up by your volunteer organizer. The task at hand is to sort, count, and box up the pairs of mittens and gloves for our Distribution Partners. Teams can consist of 5 to 20 people, ages 18+. If you have a younger group, please contact us so that we can make arrangements.

This is a great off-site event for your team, with a truly hands-on experience that will make a big difference in the lives of thousands of kids, teens, and adults in need in and near Detroit. Teams come from large and small companies, community organizations, schools and universities, and groups of friends. You'll love the fun, comradery, and satisfaction at this awesome volunteer opportunity!

Mission Statement

Mittens for Detroit collects, purchases, and distributes new, unused mittens and gloves for kids, teens and adults in need in Detroit, Michigan and other underserved cities. Since 2010, more than 1/4-millions pairs have been collected from public donation and distributed through partner agencies, organizations, schools, shelters, and the like. With the support of the community, an average of 30,000 new, warm pairs are distributed every year.

Description

Founded in 2010, Mittens for Detroit is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that collects, purchases, and distributes new, warm mittens and gloves for children, teens, and adults in need in Detroit, Michigan and other underserved cities. Currently, our Distribution Partners are located in Detroit, Hamtramck, Highland Park, Dearborn, and Pontiac. From October 1st through January 10th each year, pairs are donated in public and private collections. These are then sorted, counted, and packed by amazing volunteers in The Big Sort. Our Distribution Partner network of art agencies, organizations, schools, shelters, senior centers, veterans organizations, and the like then pick up their boxes of pairs for distribution to their guests, families, students, residents, and so on. More than one-quarter million pairs of new mittens and gloves have been collected and distributed since 2010.
