MITTENS FOR DETROIT INC

Kohl's Big Sorters

Come downtown and lend a hand to Mittens for Detroit! We are in our 12th Season, with Community Collection boxes all over Metro Detroit. The new pairs of mittens and gloves from the collections will start coming into our office before Thanksgiving, and keep coming through February.

We need your help as a volunteer in The Big Sort! This event runs from November through February, and it is comprised of a series of little Big Sorts. That's where you come in.

Teams of volunteers sign up for a 2-3 hour block of time, on a mutually agreed upon date. The task at hand is to sort, count, and box up the pairs of mittens and gloves for our Distribution Partners. Teams can consist of up to 20 people, 18+. If you have a younger group, please contact us so that we can make arrangements.

PLEASE NOTE: This is not an opportunity for INDIVIDUALS, it is a TEAM opportunity.

Pairs are collected from public donation and distributed through partner agencies, organizations, schools, shelters, and the like.

Description

Founded in 2010, Mittens for Detroit is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that collects, purchases, and distributes new mittens and gloves for children and adults in need in Detroit, Michigan and other underserved cities. From October 1st through January 10th each year, pairs are donated in public and private collections. These are then sorted, counted, and packed by amazing volunteers in The Big Sort. Partner agencies, organizations, schools, shelters and the like then pick up their boxes of pairs for distribution to their guests, families, students, residents, and so on. More than one-quarter million pairs of new mittens and gloves have been collected and distributed since 2010.
