The American Red Cross responds to a disaster every 8 minutes. That’s an average of more than 60,000 disasters every year. Disaster Action Team volunteers provide care, comfort and compassion to neighbors affected by these emergencies.

DISASTER ACTION TEAM TRAINEE:
Every day people are forced from their homes due to fires, storms or other disasters. Our Disaster Action Team volunteers respond day and night to meet the immediate needs of their neighbors. Our help may include financial assistance for food, clothing and lodging, emotional support, replacing prescription medications and other critically needed items.

DUTY OFFICERS: DAT Duty Officers play a very important role when the American Red Cross provides assistance to those affected by disasters. They are the first and single point of contact from emergency service organizations when the request for assistance is made.

  • Coordinate disaster responses from home. Requires reliable phone & Internet service, commitment to training, and minimum one 6-hour on-call shift per week.

Many disaster action team volunteers share these life experiences and skills:

  • Team-oriented
  • Availability and flexibility for at least 4-6 hours per week
  • Bilingual
  • Comfortable with ambiguity
  • Empathetic, caring and compassionate
  • Disaster response experience
  • Can remain calm and patient during stressful situations
  • Comfortable with using technology such as smart phones and laptop
