In this role, volunteers help students explore interests in areas such as art, photography, design, culinary, fitness, and technology. Additionally, volunteers will provide assistance with homework and help facilitate games and activities at the start and end of the program. Volunteers who are not able to participate for the whole afternoon session are welcome to work with students for part of the program day.
Mondays & Wednesdays OR Tuesdays & Thursdays from 3:00 p.m. to 5:45 p.m.
VOLUNTEERS should be interested in education and comfortable interacting with middle school students. Although it is not required, it would be helpful to be bilingual in English and Spanish and have a background in education, English as a second language (ESL), or social work.
Expanding Horizons is an after-school program currently partnered with Salem’s Collins Middle School. Participating middle school students engage in project-based enrichment experiences while working on building critical thinking skills and healthy relationships with each other and adults.

LEAP for Education empowers underserved students to achieve social and economic mobility by cultivating personal, educational, and career growth. We do this by teaching students academic and life-skills needed to perform at higher levels in middle school and high school. Students also receive ongoing personalized support and community connections which helps them graduate from college and create a future based on their strengths and interests.
Description
LEAP for Education is the first North Shore organization of its kind to empower first-generation-to-college and underserved youth to graduate from college and succeed in education and life regardless of ethnicity or gender. We deliver a portfolio of innovative, academic, life skills, career and college success programs for middle school, high school and college students creating a lasting impact in our youth, their families and communities.
LEAP has a variety of volunteer opportunities, ranging from one-time service to longer-term commitments. We believe that all supporters are vital to the organization’s mission, and engagement helps students find success and build a stronger community.

- All LEAP programs are built on the foundation of trust between students and adults. As such, volunteers are asked to commit to an entire three-month session.
- While volunteers are not required to speak Spanish, it would be helpful to be bilingual in English and Spanish. It is asked that volunteers are patient with multilingual students and are enthusiastic about experiencing other cultures.
