Mission Statement
The mission of The East Bay Depot is to divert waste materials from landfills by collecting and redistributing discarded goods as low-cost supplies for art, education, and social services in our Depot Store. The educational mission is to increase the awareness of school children and the general public regarding the green benefits of reusing materials.
Description
The Depot has been a staple for teachers and artists for over 40 years. The East Bay Depot for Creative Reuse is a 501c3 non-profit. Founded in 1979 by a group of Oakland Public School teachers the mission of the depot is to educate the community on the green benefits of reuse and to divert waste materials from the landfills by collecting and redistributing the discarded goods as low-cost supplies for art, education, and social services in the Depot store at 4695 Telegraph Ave, Oakland.
The Depot is the East Bay’s leading reuse organization, providing free supplies to tens of thousands of local educators, assisting countless artists and crafts-people with their projects, and diverting thousands of tons of reusable materials away from landfills, and toward useful second lives.
Working with other community partners over the years, the Depot has collected and distributed critical supplies to refugees and victims of the war in Afghanistan, clothing, and bicycles to orphanages in Nicaragua as well as humanitarian aid shipments to victims of Hurricane Katrina. Closer to home, the Depot organized collection of clothing and hygiene products for the Northern California Rural Poverty program.
