Change Someone’s Future --
Bridge the language gap by tutoring a DuPage County adult in English! As a volunteer tutor, you will teach an adult to improve their comprehension, reading, writing, and speaking skills so that they can do what most of us take for granted: make doctor appointments, go grocery shopping, apply for a job, speak with their children’s teachers, read a menu, call for an Uber, and so many other essential everyday tasks.

The need is great. It is estimated that 1 in 9 people in the county struggle with sub-par English language skills. That is roughly over 128,000 residents!

As a Literacy DuPage tutor, you will join a family of over 200 volunteers, who create lesson plans, share ideas, and forge friendships while strengthening the community’s ability to reach those who are motivated to improve their English language skills. You will find yourself in a rewarding place: empowering adults with the life-changing benefits of literacy.

To learn how you can be part of this critical work - and why it matters so much in DuPage County - attend a 45-minute Meet & Greet information session.

For the upcoming schedule, visit https://www.literacydupage.org/volunteer/register-orientation We will explain what it takes to be a tutor and how we will prepare you to teach English that will improve a life, one conversation at a time. No foreign language or prior teaching experience required.

Sign up for a virtual Meet & Greet through Volunteer Match, our website (https://literacydupage.org/volunteer/register-orientation), by phone (331-472-7160), or by email (info@literacydupage.org). Further information is available at www.literacydupage.org. We look forward to meeting you!

*Volunteers must live in DuPage County, be at least 21 years old, and fully vaccinated against COVID-19*

Mission Statement

Literacy DuPage’s mission is to help DuPage County adults achieve their life skills goals through accessible and customized tutoring in English.

Description

Literacy DuPage is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that has been committed to offering English language instruction to DuPage County adults since 1972. We have been able to provide this service to over 13,000 adult learners throughout 30 communities in the county at no cost to students or tutors.

We equip our big-hearted army of tutors to work one-to-one with adults who have little to no proficiency in comprehending, speaking, reading, or writing English. We train our volunteers and provide the materials, techniques, and confidence needed to help their learners break through language barriers and experience safer, more productive lives.

Our tutors come from a wide range of backgrounds. No prior teaching or foreign language experience is necessary. Tutors incorporate everyday materials, such as a newspaper, map, or job application, into their lessons. Tutoring occurs in a one-to-one setting at a convenient time and public location for the tutor-student pair, most commonly at libraries.

If you wish to help literally change the lives of low-literacy adult learners and impact future generations as a volunteer tutor, please visit our website at www.literacydupage.org or call us at 331-472-7160 for more information. We look forward to your participation!
