Mission Statement

The mission of The Disability Network is to promote freedom, choice, opportunity and equality for people with disabilities through advocacy, education and employment.

Description

The Disability Network's activities, structure, philosophy, and focus are driven by a rich history of community organizing, self-help, peer support and civil rights. The Disability Network was created and is operated by people with disabilities. Currently 80% of our Board of directors, 84% of our staff and 60% of our active volunteers are persons with disabilities. TDN currently serves over 4,000 consumers in Genesee County with disabilities including those who use wheelchairs, who are blind or visually impaired, deaf or hearing impaired, with amputations, cognitive disabilities, developmental disabilities, mental illness, and numerous other disabilities. Over 50% of our consumers are minorities. TDN supports personal choices in decision-making and self-directed lives for all persons with disabilities. In addition, The Disability Network coordinates a state-of-the-art, accessible Community Technology Center which provides opportunities for people with and without disabilities to learn computer literacy skills, try out high-tech adapted technologies (operate computers through biofeedback and brainwaves), and access classes that lead to employment. Over 2,300 hours of free computer training was provided to over 1,300 individuals at our technology center last year.
