We are looking for someone with a background in Social Work, Education, or Psychology who has experience working with children and can help lead our team of assistant teachers and interns in building social skills of elementary age children. The volunteer position available is with our Lunch and Learn program at Thurgood Marshall Academy Lower School in Harlem and takes place in the lunch room during the children's lunch period. Our function is to help instigate conversation and rapport among the students so that they feel socially and emotionally supported and gain confidence. It is important that our volunteer understands the facets of SEL (Social Emotional Learning) and can provide encouragement and empathy to the diverse community of children at this school. Our program gives them a unique opportunity to practice conversational and pragmatic language skills (including verbal and non-verbal communication), build friendships, and develop various life skills in a controlled social environment.
