The PAO not only serves as the principal communication advisor to the commander on communication strategy, visual information (VI) planning, and public affairs requirements across all unit missions, the PAO also conducts public affairs training for personnel when needed, facilitates media engagements, and plays an important role in mitigating misinformation and disinformation as well as steering the message of the unit’s mission throughout the community.

Along with a recruited team the PAO will be responsible for the following:

MONTHLY

  • "Monthly contact" with a recruit is defined as a call, text, and email to the contact in a month or just one of if response is returned
  • Ensure monthly contact with all potential recruits until:
    • 3 "no contact"s or
    • confirmation of no participation
  • Inspect unit recruit systems (EI Magellan, Social Media, etc) bi-weekly for new recruits
  • Manage a unit established, shared recruiting database that is updated regularly (monthly minimum)
  • Post all drill or special event pictures on private parent page within 7 days of drill or special event
  • Post marketing images that concede with marketing criteria on public social media outlets within 14 days of drill or special event
  • Conduct a parent meeting at the close of each drill date including leadership updates and allowing for parent questions

ANNUALLY

  • Complete the Annual Recruiting Report and present to Leadership in Q4
  • Establish annual fundraising goals and strategies with benchmarks to obtain goals in Q4 for following year
  • Coordinate the completion of annual cadet and officer headshots by end of Q1

ONGOING

  • Conduct shadow meetings for all potential recruits and their families during drill, introducing them to officers and engaging them with cadets
  • Coordinate unit growth and communications strategies; including but not limited to recruiting initiatives, social media maintenance and development, digital and print marketing, press coverage/PR strategies, school and military recruitment comm strategies, and parent communication strategies
  • Stay up to date with current marketing developments from HQ and market topics
  • Provide insight to leadership regarding Public Affairs Department staff and their performance
  • Assist with interviews for potential adult and cadet candidates in Public Affairs Department
  • Conduct regular and proactive public communications
  • Maintain knowledge of enrollment protocol
  • Develop and host recruiting events
  • Manage Public Affairs Staff brought in; including but not limited to Social Media Specialist, PR Specialist, Photographer, Videographer, Digital Graphics, Communications, and Grant Writer

  • Ensure social media requirements are met
  • Ensure recruiting requirements are met
  • Ensure donations requirements are met
  • Ensure photography requirements are met
  • Ensure videography requirements are met
  • Determine best recruiting efforts though file data
  • Approve and supervise social media plans for FB and IG
  • Plan and seek approval for Marketing Budgets
  • Address public relation concerns and opportunities
  • Seek out community service opportunities

MARVIN SHIELDS DIVISION IS A UNIT WITHIN THE UNITED STATES NAVAL SEA CADET CORPS (USNSCC), A YOUTH LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM SPONSORED BY THE U.S. NAVY. OUR MISSION IS TO BUILD LEADERS OF CHARACTER. WE DO SO BY OFFERING AMERICA’S YOUNG MEN AND WOMEN HANDS-ON AND EXPERIENTIAL TRAINING IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE NAVY AND ITS SISTER SERVICES, IN ORDER TO INSTILL THE HIGHEST IDEALS OF HONOR, RESPECT, COMMITMENT, AND SERVICE.

Description

Marvin Shields Division is a Tampa Bay based unit of the U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps, a leadership development nonprofit for young people, ages 10 through 17. Sponsored by the Navy League of the United States and supported by both the U.S. Navy and Coast Guard, our passionate all-volunteer force leads our units. Every year our cadets participate in training opportunities such as scuba, field and medical training, photojournalism, military police science and sailing. When cadets join the U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps, they embark upon a path of lifelong leadership. The program will teach them how to lead groups of their peers successfully and will also inspire them to become leaders in their schools and communities.
