While Kentucky Fair Housing Council provides direct legal support to folks who have experienced discrimination, we also do investigations into housing providers - everybody from local mom-and-pop landlords to big corporations that own lots of apartment complexes - to see if they are treating people differently because of one or more of the protected identities. This is where our volunteer discrimination testers - like you! - help us out.

We do this work for two reasons: to help collect legal evidence to support the allegations of our clients, and to root out systemic housing discrimination in communities. The primary task our volunteers do is contacting housing providers, whether it's landlords or realtors, and posing as a potential renter or home-buyer. It's basically like the standardized patients that are used in the medical training field, except we're doing it to gather legal evidence of possible housing discrimination. These contacts are done through both phone and in-person visits - it can vary based on what is needed for an investigation at a given time.

About Kentucky Fair Housing Council

207 E Reynolds Road, #130, Lexington, KY 40517, US

Mission Statement

The Kentucky Fair Housing Council is a civil rights agency that investigates complaints of housing discrimination throughout the state. We are a nonprofit organization, and all of the legal representation and advocacy services we provide to clients are free. Federal housing law protects nine different identities against discrimination in housing transactions. This means no matter where you live in the United States, it is illegal to discriminate against a person because of one or more of these identities: race, skin color, sex, gender, sexual orientation, religion, national origin, familial status (someone who lives with children under the age of 18) and disability.

Description

Since 1997, KFHC has been providing everything from direct legal representation to mediation and advocacy to assist clients in obtaining or maintaining housing. Over the time, we have built a reputation for being a leading voice in housing law in Kentucky.
