In the Adult Education program at LALDEF (the Latin American Legal Defense and Education Fund) we are working to strengthen our HSE (High School Equivalency) program. The program is made up of passionate volunteer teachers who volunteer time each week to teach immigrant latino adults the various subjects of High School Equivalency - Reading, Writing, Math, Science, and Social Studies. We teach based on the HiSet test, a test that is very similar to the GED. Students ideally should be ready to take the test at the end of their 16-week semester. We are looking for a commitment of 3 to 4 hours a week, generally.

Currently however, the Adult Education Programs Coordinator and the Executive Director of LALDEF are working together to re-structure the HSE Program and make sure it is a robust, well-organized program that delivers on its promise to prepare students for the HiSet test in New Jersey.

Given that re-structuring and re-building process that is underway, it is not known right now what subjects will be taught at what time, exactly how many hours classes will meet each week, what exact materials we will use, and whether or not the classes will be all in Spanish. Again, the program is being examined and re-structured to make it as strong and healthy as possible. We want to deliver the best possible program we can for our students.

It is a possibility that we will make all classes be taught in Spanish. Hence, we would very much like to be able to find volunteers who are bilingual and can speak Spanish and English. The test can be taken in Spanish or English. Many of our clients do not have good English skills and would benefit from taking the test in Spanish.

Right now, we are looking for volunteers who can teach any and/or all of those subjects - Reading, Writing, Math, Science, and Social Studies, who preferably have prior teaching experience, and who are absolutely sure they can commit at least 3 hours each week.

As we think about the framework of the program, we may, moving forward, end up looking to hire 1 or 2 part-time teachers for HSE. While it is not yet certain we will do this, it is something volunteers can keep in mind as they may be considered for that position in the future.

Teachers must be professional, respectful, and must be committed to showing up for their classes and committed to the volunteer position as if it were a paid job. When volunteers take the volunteer positions seriously, it is better for everyone and things go smoother. When volunteers do not take the position seriously, the consequences for everyone else, especially students, can be disastrous. We have had volunteers drop out mid-semester for example, which is something that we never want to see happen again. Please, do not consider volunteering with LALDEF unless you know you can commit to the position.

Please email with any questions, concerns, and for more information.
