In the Adult Education program at LALDEF (the Latin American Legal Defense and Education Fund) we require volunteer teachers for our HSE (High School Equivalency) program. The program is made up of passionate volunteer teachers who give their time each week to teach immigrant latino adults the various subjects of High School Equivalency - Reading, Writing, Math, Science, and Social Studies. We teach based on the HiSet test, a test that is very similar to the GED. Students ideally should be ready to take the test at the end of their 16-week semester. We are looking for a commitment of at least 2 hours a week.
Classes deal with high school level subject matter, equivalent to grades 9 - 12. Currently we are looking for teachers who can do Science, Math, or Social Studies. All teaching materials will be provided. Adult Education Programs Manager works Full Time at LALDEF and can offer guidance and assistance to volunteers.
Job Requirements:
- Volunteers are bilingual and speak Spanish/English, preferred but not required
- Prior teaching experience required
Teachers must be professional, respectful, and be committed to the volunteer position as if it were a paid job. Teachers must be punctual. If volunteers have a serious, committed, professional attitude towards the position, the classes and functioning of the program will be better off. When volunteers do not take the position seriously, and do not display a committed or professional attitude, the consequences for everyone else, especially students, can be disastrous. Please, do not consider volunteering with LALDEF unless you know you can commit to the position.
Please email nate.philips@laldef.org with any questions, concerns, and for more information.
