Agency & Mission: The United Jewish Council of the East Side (UJCES) is a nonprofit agency providing human services and community development programs in the Lower East Side to preserve and stabilize the community. Our programs include home care, older adult centers, social services, and food assistance. The majority of our clients served are older adults, but we serve all ages across the New York City area.

As part of our food assistance programs, UJCES sponsors two food pantries, which continue to be a vital resource for the community through the COVID-19 pandemic. The pantries cannot run without the support of volunteers.

Volunteer Leader(s) Overview: For the food pantry at the Lillian Wald Houses (12 Avenue D, New York, NY 10009), we are urgently seeking Volunteer Leaders to lead its operations. Volunteer Leaders, which may consist of community groups or confident individuals, will lead the pantry and keep it running for the community.

Tasks include:

  • Pack pantry bags
  • Oversee distribution of orders and hand out packages
  • Unload monthly deliveries to restock pantry (two Wednesdays per month)
  • Assist clients on-site with registrations and registration/appointment troubleshooting
  • Assist with communications to suppliers
UJCES staff will work to provide supplemental volunteers as needed and assist with delivery coordination.

Skills which are helpful, but not required:
  • Bilingual fluency in Spanish, Mandarin, and/or Cantonese
  • Similar experience, working with the public and/or customer service
This is also a great opportunity for college or graduate students looking for relevant internship opportunities, for credit.

To express interest, discuss further, or for any questions, please contact Dana Donati, Manager of Volunteer Services at UJCES, at volunteer@ujces.org. Please mention the "Volunteer Leader" food pantry opportunity.

Mission Statement

UJCES services as a coordinating body of neighborhood, secular, civic and fraternal organizations. Formed in 1971 by neighborhood leaders and residents, UJCES works to preserve and stabilize the Lower East Side of Manhattan community through the provision of a wide range of human services and community development programs. While the majority or programs are oriented to the needs of seniors, UJCES also operates a wide range of programs for families and children.

Description

With families fraying, spread out, or non-existent, a substantial portion of long-time residents of the Lower East Side doesn’t have family they can count on for the help they need.

UJCES fills that gap with services such as home health care aides, food assistance programs, social services, and senior centers.
