We are looking for a Spanish-speaking volunteer to tutor a 17-year-old refugee youth from Guatemala. She lives in a foster home in Wayland, and she has been in the United States since January of 2020. This youth is a 10th grader at her local public high school. Her case manager shared, "This youth needs tutoring to work on her English language skills. She speaks primarily Spanish, and often gets frustrated at school because she cannot communicate with her peers and teachers. She also struggles learning in her classes because she cannot understand and speak English. It will benefit Cici greatly to have a tutor who is bilingual who can help her with her English language skills."

A tutor would commit to six months of volunteering for one, 1-hour tutoring session each week.

Mission Statement

Bethany demonstrates the love and compassion of Jesus Christ by protecting children, empowering youth, and strengthening families through quality social services.

Description

For refugees fleeing danger, the search for safety can be extremely challenging. And too often, people become numbers in a system that can feel impossible to navigate. That’s why we guide, protect, advocate for, and support refugees. In the U.S., we offer resettlement and continued support services in strategic locations.

Bethany Christian Services' Refugee and Immigrant Services program encompasses adult and family resettlement as well as refugee foster care for Unaccompanied Children and Unaccompanied Refugee Minors. Our services for unaccompanied refugee youth include case management, counseling, housing (foster homes, group homes, independent living), classes (New Arrival, Life Skills, driver's training), and volunteer mentoring and tutoring.
