Consider The Homeless is a nonprofit, grassroots organization in Berkeley, CA that is 100% volunteer. We deliver food and survival supplies to unhoused Berkeley residents living on the street, in their car, or in an encampment. We meet people where they are, literally & figuratively. (Many other services to the homeless require that they travel to a center or facility, at personal cost or on foot, and sometimes at risk of exposure to COVID). We have a mobile soup kitchen that serves 100+ people 2x/week, rain or shine, and grocery bags of non-perishable proteins, fruits, other ready-to-eat foods & clean drinking water distributed to about 80 people 2x/week. We are in the process of soliciting new members for our Executive Board. This is an exceptional and rare opportunity to be of service to your local community while also gaining invaluable professional experience at a 501(c)(3) nonprofit in a position of significant responsibility. Training is available for every aspect of this volunteer position, although we will give preference to those with prior Board experience. This is a "working" Board in which members actively work in-between meetings to accomplish organizational goals. Board members differ from other volunteers in that they have greater decision-making authority and are legally bound to protect the organization's financial resources. We anticipate this position will require up to 25 hours per month. Zoom meetings are 2 hours, 1-2 times per month. Additionally, Directors are expected to contribute about 5 hours of work per week *outside* of meetings.
The Secretary is one of 7 Board members. This role entails:

  1. Primary responsibility for IRS mandated permanent records of Board actions and essential records.
  2. Coordinates submission of required documentation to maintain 501(c)(3) status with 3 agencies. (Training provided.)
  3. Creates and maintains orderly digital files, documents essential processes.
  4. Prepares draft agenda for Board meetings with direction from Chair.
  5. Manages Zoom functions, records meeting motions, produces Board minutes.
  6. If local, picks up mail from the post office box weekly and distributes as needed.

Mission Statement

CONSIDER THE HOMELESS! A small yet dedicated group of neighbors and friends who seek to alleviate the suffering of Berkeley’s homeless, our brothers and sisters who are living and sleeping on the streets of our fair city. Our goal is to offer whatever help we can to those living on the streets - beginning with the basic need for food. We strive to warm their bellies and their hearts while offering what we have, with a simple greeting and a smile. There is no hidden agenda. We gain their trust as we respect their privacy and we always treat them with the utmost respect.

Description

Consider The Homeless is a nonprofit, local grassroots organization in Berkeley, CA that is 100% volunteer -- we have no paid staff. We deliver food and survival supplies to unhoused Berkeley residents living on the street, in their car, or in an encampment. Unlike other services for the homeless, we do not require that people find their way to us. We go to them, and we meet them where they are...literally and figuratively. We have two primary programs: 1) A mobile soup kitchen that delivers hot, homemade soup with bread and survival supplies to over a hundred people, every Thursday and Sunday evening, rain or shine. 2) During the pandemic, we've also been providing grocery bags of non-perishable proteins, fruits, other ready-to-eat foods & clean drinking water to about 80 people on both Mondays and Fridays. We call this the "Berkeley Still Cares" program.
