Home Grown Host Homes

Do you remember what it was like navigating your transition to adulthood? Who supported you through your transition to independent living? Most of us had our parents or another caring adult in our lives to help us navigate that transition. Unfortunately, not everyone has someone to support them through this process, and they need a caring adult like yourself to lend them a helping hand.

If you have an extra room or space in/at your home (spare bedroom, space that can be turned into a private room, an in-law unit, trailer, etc.), consider opening up your home and your heart to "host" a transition-aged youth (ages 18-24) experiencing housing instability for a short stay. Hosts provide youth with housing, stability, and mentorship, while Home Grown staff work with them to achieve their goals related to independent living. As a host, you won't change the world, but you can change the world for one person!

And for hosts who need it, there is a voluntary financial stipend (based on need and availability) to help offset the additional costs of utilities, food, and toiletries for the youth.

Hosts receive training and support from Home Grown. We do our best to match you with a youth based on shared values, interests, and lifestyle. We’re NOT just placing a youth with a host and saying "Good luck!" Hosts and youth will have multiple opportunities to meet, and both parties have the option to say "No, I don’t think this is a good fit" or "Yes, I would like to move forward with this match."

We cannot do this work without the help of hosts-they’re the backbone of our program. To apply to become a host or to learn more about Home Grown’s Host Home Program, the hosting experience, and the difference you can make as a host, visit our website at You can also call or text Joann at (707) 502-2228 or email

About Home Grown Host Homes

Mission Statement

Home Grown Host Home’s Mission is to "Build community-based interventions to help homeless youth attain stable housing and break the cycle of homelessness." Our vision is to see " A community actively engaged in ending youth homelessness by mentoring, advocating for, and opening their homes to youth in need." Our Values are: Inclusion: We acknowledge that privilege exists in our society and actively work to promote equitable access to resources. Youth Centered: We seek out, value, and incorporate youths’ voices into our organization. Community Building: We work to foster community by creating opportunities for connection, relationship building, and a sense of belonging for our youth. Transparency: We operate openly and honestly. Empowerment: We aim to give youth the knowledge and power to make informed choices about what is best for themselves Respect: We value, listen to, learn from and appreciate each other, our youth, our board, our donors, and our community.

Home Grown uses the host home model which pairs transition-aged youth (18-24) with community members in Humboldt County who have extra space in their homes. This approach allows youth to obtain access to stable short-term housing (3-12 months) while building meaningful connections with caring adults in their community. Youth choose who they will live with and understand that this is an interim step in their long-term housing plan. While youth are in the host home, Home Grown’s case managers work with them on pursuing their housing, academic, and employment goals; saving up extra income; and searching for long-term housing.

Our host home program empowers youth to find their own path out of homelessness-we provide stable housing, build trusting relationships, and assist with academic, employment, and other goals related to independent living.
