Home Grown Host Homes

Do you remember what it was like navigating your transition to adulthood? Who supported you through your transition to independent living? Most of us had our parents or another caring adult in our lives to help us navigate that transition. Unfortunately, not everyone has someone to support them through this process, and they need a caring adult like yourself to lend them a helping hand.

If you have an extra room or space in/at your home (spare bedroom, space that can be turned into a private room, an in-law unit, trailer, etc.), consider opening up your home and your heart to "host" a transition-aged youth (ages 18-24) experiencing housing instability for a short stay. Hosts provide youth with housing, stability, and mentorship, while Home Grown staff work with them to achieve their goals related to independent living. As a host, you won't change the world, but you can change the world for one person!

And for hosts who need it, there is a voluntary financial stipend (based on need and availability) to help offset the additional costs of utilities, food, and toiletries for the youth.

Hosts receive training and support from Home Grown. We do our best to match you with a youth based on shared values, interests, and lifestyle. We’re NOT just placing a youth with a host and saying "Good luck!" Hosts and youth will have multiple opportunities to meet, and both parties have the option to say "No, I don’t think this is a good fit" or "Yes, I would like to move forward with this match."

We cannot do this work without the help of hosts-they’re the backbone of our program. To apply to become a host or to learn more about Home Grown’s Host Home Program, the hosting experience, and the difference you can make as a host, visit our website at www.homegrownhosthomes.org. Description

Home Grown uses the host home model which pairs transition-aged youth (18-24) with community members in Humboldt County who have extra space in their homes. This approach allows youth to obtain access to stable short-term housing (3-12 months) while building meaningful connections with caring adults in their community. Youth choose who they will live with and understand that this is an interim step in their long-term housing plan. While youth are in the host home, Home Grown’s case managers work with them on pursuing their housing, academic, and employment goals; saving up extra income; and searching for long-term housing.

Our host home program empowers youth to find their own path out of homelessness-we provide stable housing, build trusting relationships, and assist with academic, employment, and other goals related to independent living.
