Mission Statement
Home Field Advantage (HFA) is a community-driven project determined to make its programs connective and sustainable by creating and training local leaders to coach after-school activities. HFA is committed to the development and welfare of every participant and collaborates with leading soccer clubs, educational institutions, and synergistic programs to ensure every participant has the best possible experience. HFA's mission is to create healthier, stronger, more active and connected communities through sports leadership development. HFA’s vision is to create a sustainable sports structure within our communities by activating local neighborhoods through coaching education, ultimately leading the next generation of homegrown role models while using existing underused facilities. HFA creates leaders for local communities, promotes physical activity, activates underused local facilities, and ultimately creates healthier and more connected communities.
Description
Home Field Advantage was created as a nonprofit organization in Southern California in 2016. What started as a small 6-week program to get elementary school kids active and teach them new soccer skills quickly flourished into something more profound. After maxing out this first program and learning how appreciative the schools, parents, and players were to participate, HFA took on the challenge of expanding and making this an option for more students in the area. Its leaders discovered a synergistic way to create home-grown leadership while simultaneously providing safe, after-school sports programs for schools in the Downey area. By teaching high school and college students proper coaching techniques and leadership skills, HFA is able to produce top-tier student coaches to run the after-school programs.
During the 2019-2020 season (pre-covid), HFA's soccer program was at 12 schools while its basketball program was at 7 schools. During that time, HFA had over 330 kids enrolled in all its programs and had 40 volunteer coaches assisting at practices. Most recently, HFA returned to the elementary schools for the 2021-2022 school year.
