ORGANIZATION: accentCARE Hospice of Texas (formerly Texas Home Health Hospice)

Do you have a trained dog? Want to bring smiles to people in need? We want you!

Pet Team Volunteers needed in the Longview/Tyler area. As a trained Hospice Direct Patient Care Volunteer and member of the Loyal Friends Pet Team, you have offered to give time to visit hospice patients and families who would not ordinarily have the benefit of animal companionship. Loyal Friends Pet Team Volunteers share the "unconditional love" of their dog with others.

Animal visits not only bring joy and happiness, but research has shown that interactions can decrease isolation and depression, reduce the symptoms of anxiety, improve pain, stabilize blood pressure, even improve cardiovascular health and sleep.

Volunteers interested in Loyal Friends Pet Team must satisfy all the requirements of Direct Patient Care Volunteer including full Volunteer Training. In addition, dogs must be trained, meet the requirements and be registered or certified with Delta Society, Therapy Dogs International or other accredited therapy dog association. We avoid the use of the term Pet "Therapy". While our dogs are certified, and our volunteers are trained, and it feels very therapeutic to have a pet visit, neither dog nor volunteer are licensed in "therapy", nor do they need any type of continuing education to maintain certification.

As part of the interview process, the Pet Team (Dog & Handler) attends a basic dog obedience and temperament interview with the Volunteer Director. Dogs in our program must have an annual vet exam with current vaccinations on file. Pet Team owners must carry liability insurance through their certifying organization. Pet Team visits comply with protocol for visiting etiquette and infection control.

Loyal Friends Pet Team is a true partnership in care which we are confident will bring many hours of joy to patients and family members. We look forward to working with each volunteer who chooses this special gift of hospice volunteer service.
