Do you remember who taught you to read? Do you remember how it opened up the world to you? You can help open the world for a child by providing individual attention and encouragement through the San Diego Oasis Tutoring Program. According to the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), 69% of 3rd graders in California are not reading at the proficient level. This problem has far-reaching impact, including lower high school graduation rates, and can follow them into adulthood. Due to COVID-related school closures, UNESCO anticipates a 20% increase in children falling behind the minimum proficiency level in reading. You can truly change a child's life in one hour per week.
Each year Oasis places older adults (50+) in local San Diego elementary schools, helping children grades K-4 enhance their reading and writing skills. Free training and materials are provided. We would love to have you join us!

Description
Oasis is a unique educational program for adults 50+ who want to continue to learn and be productive throughout life. Membership is free and open to anyone 50 or older. You will find exciting opportunities to participate in classes, lectures, discussion groups, performances, trips, off-site adventures, and mentoring children in our community through our intergenerational tutoring program.
