Power of the Pen, based in Ohio, is seeking a volunteer copy editor for the 2022 Book of Winners, a perfect-bound, printed collection of the highest-quality writing from our 2021-2022 creative writing tournaments for 7th and 8th graders. Working from a list of student pieces eligible for publication in the Book of Winners, the copy editor will edit each piece for grammar and conventions; add the prompt number, the student’s grade level, school, and coach to each piece; and compile the pieces into the appropriate Word document or Google Doc for each section of the book. This volunteer position requires excellent copy editing and organizational skills. Expect to spend less than four hours per week from late January 2022 through the end of June 2022 on an average of five or fewer creative writing responses per week, ranging from 250 to 1,600 words each. You will be credited as the copy editor in the book.

Mission Statement

We empower young people to find and develop a creative voice that is uniquely their own by engaging students in interscholastic writing tournaments and providing a platform for publication.

Description

Power of the Pen hosts district and regional creative writing tournaments throughout Ohio, culminating in a state tournament in May. Every school year, thousands of 7th and 8th graders throughout Ohio compete in Power of the Pen tournaments, finding inspiration and encouragement to tell their stories.

For more than 30 years, Power of the Pen’s mission has been to empower young writers to find and develop their own unique creative voice. We accomplish this through writing tournaments that provide the incentives of competition and one-on-one feedback for each participating writer. For months before tournaments begin, students practice with their schools’ creative writing clubs to prepare for competition. At tournament awards ceremonies, the shouts and cheers in celebration of excellent writing rival those of the most heated sports competition.

The best student writing from tournaments is published annually in our Book of Winners, which serves as a mentor text for 7 th and 8 th grade Power of the Pen writers. In addition, we provide support to Power of the Pen creative writing club coaches as they prepare their students for tournaments. In a typical year, more than 3,000 writers participate in the program.
