We are a national grassroots advocacy organization that has worked with others to secure tens of millions of dollars in additional Congressional appropriations for lifesaving global health programs funded by the United States government. Currently, the Fund for Global Health and other TB advocates are asking the Biden Administration to launch a Global Tuberculosis Initiative, including a request to Congress for $1 billion in FY 22 for USAID’s TB account.

We are seeking constituents of U.S. Representative Adriano Espaillat (D) of Manhattan and the Bronx, a member of the subcommittee that funds foreign aid, to join our work. Our Advocacy Fellows secure meetings with Congressional staff and produce virtual town halls to speak to their legislator directly.

This is an outstanding role for volunteers interested in global health and international development, as well as those interested in grassroots advocacy to Congressional representatives! We are a welcoming team meeting virtually twice a week. Additionally, we offer Fellows the opportunity to hear from leaders in global health once a month during our national zoom meeting! Despite the virtual nature of this fellowship, our fellows have tangible, real-world impact on the Congressional appropriations process that translates into lifesaving outcomes in the most vulnerable parts of the world.

Currently we are focused on programs addressing tuberculosis, the top infectious disease killer in the world, and on promoting effective poverty-targeted primary health care.

Learning outcomes:

  • Experience with citizen lobbying actions such as writing letters, talking with Congressional staff, meeting a Member of Congress.

  • Detailed knowledge of the Congressional appropriations process and how to influence it.

  • Knowledge based on own research into the global need for primary health care and resources to fight tuberculosis.

  • Experience with organizing others to engage in these activities.

Qualifications:

  • Reliability; promptness in responding to communications

  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills

  • Helpful: experience in advocacy, outreach, organizing and training people
