Unboxed: Adventures in Cardboard! 11 am to 2 pm, Sunday, November 28th

Why cardboard? Remember as a child when the box was more fun to play with than what was inside?
We do. An empty cardboard box provides endless opportunities to imagine what could be. More
importantly, cardboard provides that the right medium that:

● fosters creativity, ingenuity, resourcefulness, perseverance and teamwork;
● engages caregivers and children in creative play; and
● builds 21st century skills including communication, collaboration, critical thinking, creativity, and
cooperation.

This one-day fun event is part of our Playful Learning Landscapes Initiative that turns everyday spaces
into playful learning spaces. The goal of this initiative is to encourage caregiver and child interactions and
educate families on the Power of Play. This event will engage children of all ages around the Bridgewater
area to use their imagination and participate in Creative Play, which intersects a variety of principles and
practices from educational theory like project-based learning, constructivism, and design thinking. At the
heart of creative play is that children are naturally creative and curious. Adults can help foster this
natural creativity by giving guidance, context, support - and a little space to get messy!

For this event, families are challenged to create and build a fort using cardboard, recycled materials and
their imagination. This event is a celebration of creativity and the role communities can play in fostering
it. The Community Hub at Bridgewater Commons is a natural fit for hosting this event as the mall already
is a gathering place for families throughout the region.

Please note: This is an indoor event with children not yet eligible for a COVID-19 vaccination, therefore, all participants and volunteers will be asked to wear a mask.

*Play Captains should be assertive adults and young adults who feel comfortable managing people.

* Play Workers should be comfortable interacting with children and their parents.
