ORGANIZATION: BakerRipley

Students in Economic Initiatives Verizon Learning Center come to BakerRipley to learn computer skills for jobs and education.

The Workshop Volunteer has a vital role in helping BakerRipley students with duties such as: answering the phone, greeting people as they come in, answering any questions about the programs, and giving tours periodically as people would like to see the space. They will also assist with workshops. During this time they will help set up, prep materials, and possibly lead a class if they would like.

What will this achieve?
The duties of the Workshop Volunteer will allow for programming to be operating at maximum efficiency, while making the Learning Center a safe and essential space to learn in.

What will I need to do?
-Check voicemails and return phone calls as needed, to provide information.
-Greet people, answer questions on programming.
-Give tours of the different areas.
-Train and be proficient in the center's specialized software & equipment.
-Lead and support (set-up, clean, restock) workshops.
-Other duties specifically around coordination of special events or assignments.

What's required of me to be successful in this role?
-Cultural Sensitivity and Mutual Respect: Ability to interact professionally with students of diverse backgrounds, developing a rapport with students as the primary drivers of their own learning and success.
-Good Interpersonal & Communication skills: Willing to work with students on an individual level and collaboratively lead groups of people in workshops.
-Self-starter skills: Willing to take initiative, and learn new technology.

Where would I be volunteering?
Sharpstown-Gulfton Campus Verizon Learning Center: 6500 Rookin St, Houston, TX 77074

NOTE: Volunteers are required to wear masks for in-person volunteering roles.

What is the time commitment?
-To get you started, we will provide training in our program structure, menu of software, equipment and the main communication tools. -The training will take about 2 hours and will be arranged with one of our team members in November.
-A minimum of 5 hours a week starting in December.
-Preferably Afternoon Shifts
Monday-Friday, Shifts from 1pm-6pm
