What is Meals on Wheels ? Meals on Wheels is a nationwide network of community-based, non-profit programs dedicated to providing older adults who 60 years old or older and either home-bound or have difficulty shopping/cooking a nutritious meal, a friendly visit and a quick safety check.

What will I be doing when I volunteer? The volunteer job is delivering meals and friendly greetings to home-bound older adults. Most typically, this involves picking up meals at a central location and delivering them along a predetermined route directly to the homes of several older adults in the area. Most deliveries are done between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Once you are done, you return the delivery packaging items, report to the site coordinator and get back on your way. We are following strict COVID-19 safety protocols. As of September 1, 2021, all volunteers who work in person with clients, staff, and/or volunteers must be fully vaccinated.

Mission Statement

Council on Aging of Central Oregon is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting dignity, well-being, security and independence for Aging Adults of Central Oregon and is the designated Area Agency on Aging.

Description

The Council on Aging of Central Oregon began by offering Dial-a-Ride services in the 1970s. It soon added nutrition programs including Meals-on-Wheels. The 1990s saw the construction of senior centers which enabled the Council to provide congregate meals to large groups of aging adults and to establish an ongoing presence in more remote, rural and isolated communities.

Today, Council on Aging staff members provide not only nutrition programs, but also case management with individual assessment and periodic follow-up; resources for disabled seniors, including support for those suffering from - and those caring for those with -- dementia; coordination of in-home care; free legal assistance, Medicare and Medicaid advising; and a variety of information, education, outreach and referral services.
