Literacy Council of Northern Virginia

Our adult learners
Students in one of our English classes

The Literacy Council of Northern Virginia (LCNV) provides English classes for immigrant adults, empowering them to make measurable improvements in their lives. Using today’s best practices for adult learning and second language acquisition, LCNV offers a variety of in-person and online English classes taught by trained volunteers. LCNV’s classes are inexpensive and offered at various times, making them accessible to the largest number of adults with the most urgent language needs.

LCNV is seeking experienced ESOL teachers to teach beginning-level English classes for adults starting in January 2022. Classes meet 2-3 times per week for 12 weeks. Training, curriculum, support and class aides will be provided.

LCNV is committed to quality instruction as well as to the safety of everyone involved. For all in-person classes, LCNV requires students and volunteers to be fully vaccinated for COVID-19 and wear a mask.

Mission Statement

The mission of the Literacy Council of Northern Virginia is to teach adults the basic skills of reading, writing, speaking, and understanding English in order to empower them to participate more fully and confidently in their communities.

Description

Established in 1962, the Literacy Council of Northern Virginia has over 50 years experience in the Fairfax community. LCNV serves nearly 1,500 beginning-level English language and literacy adult learners. LCNV's programs provide general English language instruction, targeted literacy skill development, and language for career-specific pathways through classroom, small group and tutorial instruction. Each year roughly 500 volunteers participate with the Council. They are the English teachers, tutors, testers, advocates, and behind-the-scenes administrative, event, and fundraising support that enables LCNV to help each of our adult learners advance toward their English goals.
