Covid-19 delivered a devastating blow to communities across the world. But it also brought the hope that we could come together as a global community to fight the pandemic and improve systems and communities that would ultimately work better for people who struggled long before the pandemic existed. Unfortunately, there is work to do to meet this opportunity.

We are over a year and a half into the pandemic and facing head on the absurd inequality of the world. A world where nearly 95 million people entered extreme poverty, 90% of people in low-income countries could be forced to wait years for access to a Covid-19 vaccine, and millions in the U.S. are at risk of eviction. In stark contrast, while Covid was spreading rapidly and delivering devastating consequences to communities who were already struggling, the wealth of the world’s ultra-rich multiplied at an astounding rate.

The everyday violence and injustice of poverty, systemic racism, and inequality are rooted in public policy. What discriminatory policies have created, equitable and just policies can help change - but only when we stand up for them.  That’s where advocacy comes in, pushing our elected officials toward solutions that can help bring an end to poverty.

Thanks to the work of advocates across the country, Congress has done some things to respond, passing historic legislation to invest in communities here and across the world. But it’s clearly & simply not enough.

We must demand more. It’s time to take action now.

RAISE YOUR VOICE AS AN ADVOCATE

It’s understandable to feel discouraged, exhausted, and overwhelmed when facing oppression and inequality in our lives, communities, and world. But you can respond with resolve and power too. Ready to channel your passion into actions that can make a meaningful difference in people’s lives and start to chip away at the oppressive systems that have hurt so many while allowing others to thrive? If you said yes, then advocacy is the perfect match for you.

As a RESULTS advocate, you will call for solutions that will make an impact for people experiencing poverty and inequality in the U.S. and across the world.

WHO IS RESULTS?

RESULTS is a movement of passionate, committed everyday people. Together we use our voices to influence political decisions that will bring an end to poverty.

RESULTS supports advocates in all 50 states plus the District of Columbia. We live in rural communities and urban population centers. We are 20-year-old college students and 80-year-old community members. We are people who have experienced poverty first-hand as well as people who have experienced economic privilege. Most importantly, we are connected by our shared values that all people should have access to basic rights and have our basic needs met.

We take action individually and as a part of RESULTS volunteer led chapters, calling attention to the problems in our communities and pushing for solutions that will make a difference. Collectively, we bring our voices together to build power for lasting change.

WHAT DO RESULTS ADVOCATES DO?

RESULTS advocates build long-term relationships with members of Congress. Through these relationships, we can influence them to pass legislation and leverage billions of dollars to address the oppressive forces that create poverty and inequality.

As a RESULTS advocate, you will:

  • Develop relationships with your members of Congress so that when you get in touch, they listen
  • Meet face-to-face with your members of Congress and their staff
  • Write persuasive opinion pieces and get published in the media
  • Be part of a movement of people committed to ending the systemic and structural injustices that drive poverty

DOES ADVOCACY REALLY MATTER?

By raising our voices together, RESULTS advocates have and will continue to push Congress to make progress on both US and global poverty & inequality issues like:

  • Making sure everyone, everywhere has access to lifesaving vaccines
  • Securing safe, affordable housing for everyone in the United States
  • Closing the racial wealth divide
  • Ending childhood malnutrition
  • Ensuring all kids have the opportunity to get a quality education
  • Tackling some of the world’s biggest killers, like HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis

About RESULTS

Location:

1101 15th Street NW, Suite 1200, Washington, DC 20005, US

Mission Statement

RESULTS is a movement of passionate, committed everyday people. Together they use their voices to influence political decisions that will bring an end to poverty. Volunteers receive training, support, and inspiration to become skilled advocates. In time, volunteers learn to effectively advise policy makers, guiding them towards decisions that improve access to education, health, and economic opportunity. With every hour of their time, volunteers multiply their impact through the enormous power of advocacy -- whether it’s helping change policy to support millions of families putting food on the table or helping raise billions of dollars for the world’s most vulnerable children. Backed by the in-depth research and legislative expertise of staff, RESULTS advocates realize the incredible power they possess to use their voices to change the world.

Description

For over 40 years, RESULTS and RESULTS Educational Fund have been shining light on critical, effective solutions to poverty. By combining the powerful voices of civic advocates with research and oversight of U.S. anti-poverty efforts at home and abroad, RESULTS has been changing government priorities and people’s lives.

"I saw RESULTS on VolunteerMatch, but I wasn’t sure what advocacy was. Before that, I wasn’t really aware of the way different government policies impacted me. But RESULTS gave me a whole new perspective. I learned that if you want change, first you need to see what members of Congress are doing and build connections." - Yaseer Khanani

"I became an advocate because I wanted to be more involved in an organization that strives to make positive change. I really appreciate how genuine and dedicated everyone is to the RESULTS mission." - Sunjay Menon

"At RESULTS, we advocate for the issues that are close to my heart, like global health, education, and poverty eradication. I get to talk about issues that I witness throughout my professional and personal life. I can effect change by raising my voice." - Shabina Hussein
